Few people realize, however, that the familiar text is but a small part of a nine-stanza, fervent political poem created in 1878 by Naftali Herz Imber, a passionate secular Zionist poet. For the thematic and structural model of the poem, Imber employed the Polish patriot's song ("Poland is not yet lost, while we still live!"), which became the national anthem of the Polish republic.
